BRUTAL FORMS / BRUTAL FORMS / BRUTAL FORMS /

This is a project inspired by Brutalist forms in architecture. Started by the Interest in Burtalistic architecture with the massive concrete structures ,bold shapes and where the unfinished construction systems are shown.  After delving into the theoretical aspects in my bachelor thesis about what makes Brutalism, I looked further into the visual exploration of the buildings and aspects of this architectural movement.

After analysing various Brutalist buildings, I chose to take one building I preferred the most, Casa del Portuale by Aldo Loris Rossi. From this building I disected basic shapes  and created this into laser-cutted templates. Through sketching and redefining these forms, I searched for new Brutalist outlines. It really came to life when crafting it into a large piece. I employed translucent papers, retained pencil lines, and employed dry brush techniques to give this raw structured feeling. This resulted in what, to me, embodies 'Brutal Forms.' The piece had a binding which you can open, allowing endless reconfiguration of new forms by altering the sequence of the excisting forms on paper. This folding technique  and the visible lines through the paper enable the discovery of new Brutalist shapes throughout the work allowing al new Brutalistic Forms.
